ELIGIBILITY: Elderly not able to prepare own meals or in need of a special diet; doctors sometimes recommend participants.

 

FEES: Donations, or $3.00 for meals

SERVICES: Serves as third party between senior and the agency he or she is having difficulty with--such as utility company, insurance, health benefits, Social Security, nursing home complaints, etc. This office also gives referrals for legal assistance for elderly as well as assistance with completing forms. Many problems for the elderly--Nutrition, Foster Grandparents, Senior Companion, Retired Volunteer, JTPA, etc.

 

ELIGIBILITY: Age 60 years and over.

PURPOSE:  In partnership with the Department of Defense, major military medical centers and veterans service organizations, Higher Ground serves men and women of the armed forces who have been severely wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. The types of injuries SVAS specializes in include traumatic brain injuries, blindness, visual impairment, PTSD, spinal cord, amputations and severe burns.

SERVICE:  Certified trained veteran’s outreach coordinators are available to provide phone counseling.  Higher Ground use’s sports and recreational activities as a means of healing, therapy and rehabilitation. The program offers four winter snowsports camps, one watersports camp, and two fly-fishing camps to more than 80 warriors and their significant others each year. Some of the more popular activities include alpine skiing, snowboarding, Nordic skiing, sled hockey, snowshoeing, ice skating, fly fishing, water skiing, wakeboarding, kayaking, whitewater rafting, horseback riding, mountain biking, canoeing, hiking and paragliding.

PURPOSE: This a toll-free line targeted to the population of returning armed forces men and women and veterans from previous conflicts and wars. This “life” line is a confidential connection which plans to utilize trained peer veterans ready to provide hope and help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

 

For  veterans who came back from active duty and has trouble with memories and experiences of the war.  It is a time to honor soldiers who gave their lives in service to their country. Some soldiers lost much of themselves in combat though they may have not lost their lives. Some have returned deadened and numbed to emotion, wracked with survivor guilt and images of what they witnessed.

PURPOSE: The Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has founded a national suicide prevention hotline to ensure veterans in emotional crisis have free, 24/7 access to trained counselors.
